چکیده

8.1 A brief description of the phenomenology Information about climate history over the past two million years or so is obtained from two main sources [4]. The £rst is sediment cored from the ocean’s bottom, where the isotopic compositions of buried plankton skeletons and other buried material are used as proxy indicators to past climate, and are related empirically to past ice land volume, paleo temperature, etc (Fig. 3). The second source is ice core records from Antarctica and Greenland, that contain again various isotopic records as well as trapped gas bubbles and atmospheric dust from the past 400,000 years or so (Fig. 37).

Persistent millennial-scale link between Greenland climate and northern Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone under interglacial conditions

The intensity and/or extent of the northeastern Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) varied in-phase with the Northern Hemisphere high latitude climate on millennial timescales during the last glacial period, indicating the occurrence of atmospheric and oceanic connections under glacial conditions. While millennial variability was reported for both the Greenland and the northern Atlantic Ocean dur...

Phylogenetic assemblage structure of North American trees is more strongly shaped by glacial–interglacial climate variability in gymnosperms than in angiosperms

How fast does biodiversity respond to climate change? The relationship of past and current climate with phylogenetic assemblage structure helps us to understand this question. Studies of angiosperm tree diversity in North America have already suggested effects of current water-energy balance and tropical niche conservatism. However, the role of glacial-interglacial climate variability remains t...

Physical mechanisms behind biogeochemical glacial-interglacial COe variations

The atmospheric concentration of C02 has undergone significant and fairly regular changes on a time scale of 100 kyr during the at least last four glacial-interglacial cycles. Here we present a novel coupled physical-biogeochemical mechanism for these variations. Previous studies had to arbitrarily specify the behavior of the physical climate system in order to invoke a biogeochemical mechanism...

Sea ice switch mechanism and glacial-interglacial CO2 variations

[1] A physical mechanism is proposed for the glacial-interglacial variations in the rate of vertical mixing and in sea ice cover in the Southern Ocean. Such variations were postulated without an explanation by Toggweiler [1999] and Stephens and Keeling [2000], who used them to explain the glacial-interglacial CO2 variations. In the physical mechanism explored here, initially given by Gildor and...

Eight glacial cycles from an Antarctic ice core

The Antarctic Vostok ice core provided compelling evidence of the nature of climate, and of climate feedbacks, over the past 420,000 years. Marine records suggest that the amplitude of climate variability was smaller before that time, but such records are often poorly resolved. Moreover, it is not possible to infer the abundance of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from marine records. Here we...
